HIGH-PERFORMANCE LEXUS HYBRID JOINS THE FORCE (05 October 2005)

HIGH-PERFORMANCE LEXUS HYBRID JOINS THE FORCE (05 October 2005)

The high-performance Lexus RX400h luxury hybrid SUV has aroused strong interest from the UK Police force.

Lexus RX400h is the world's first premium SUV to feature a hybrid power system, and is based on the highly successful and award-winning RX330.

A combination of high performance, low emissions and fuel economy have led to the pilot introduction of an RX400h with the Hampshire Police force in England.

Lexus RX400h achieves 0-100km/h in 7.6 seconds.

It is powered by a 3.3-litre V6 engine producing 200hp (157kW) DIN, combined with 173kW from front and rear electric motors, the rear electric motor engaging electric four-wheel drive through the rear axle.

John Bradley, Hampshire Police Fleet Manager, said, "We have already received positive feedback from our officers after an initial trial and know that the vehicle's performance was outstanding, with quick acceleration and more than adequate response throughout the range of the electronic gearbox."

"Lexus hybrid technology is a unique proposition," said Scott Grant, divisional manager, Lexus Australia.

"Vehicles like RX400h and GS450h show that hybrid can deliver levels of performance previously limited to large-capacity petrol-engine models.

"These levels of performance are combined with the traits traditionally associated with hybrid technology , low emissions, fuel economy and smart technology." The RX400h's hybrid petrol engine and electric motor system has a world's-best ratio of power to weight and volume, a high-voltage battery and a generator.

The electric motor at the rear axle, which provides the vehicle with electric four-wheel drive capability, can be automatically engaged when required.

In any journey, the system will operate in different modes in order to maintain maximum efficiency, with power either from the engine or from the electric motors, or a combination of both.

Whenever the vehicle comes to a halt, the engine will automatically be switched off to minimise fuel consumption.

Since its introduction to Europe and the UK in June this year, the RX400h has been attracting the attention of fleet buyers and limousine companies, with a clear appeal beyond private luxury car buyers.

Lexus RX400h's introduction to Australia is still pending.

Note: RX400h specifications provided are based on UK production model.
